Design Concept: One-petal Guanyin, one of the thirty-three manifestations of the bodhisattva Guanyin (Avalokitesvara), leisurely reclines on a lotus leave, with a mien of absolute contentment. In fulfilling her mission of delivering the world from all tribulation, Guanyin takes on various forms, large and small, male or female, young or old, etc. Indeed, Guanyin hearkens to the sound of all creatures, great and small. Thus Guanyin (She Who Perceives Sound) is also known in Chinese as Guanshiyin (She Who Perceives the Sound of the World). In this particular manifestation, Guanyin is depicted in a small form, comfortably reclining on a lotus leaf or flower petal, attentively listening for the sound of aquatic creatures, perhaps just a frog or a minnow, beseeching her to rescue them from imminent danger. The underlying message of One-petal Guanyin is one of hope, satisfaction, and tranquility. |
